Masayuki Sanada commanded Ueda castle. In 1600 he led a spirited defence of the castle which managed to prevent Hidetada Tokugawa from arriving at Sekigahara on time. This represented a considerable split in the family, because his son Nobuyuki Sanada joined the Tokugawa faction.
