Kagemusha (影武者 is a 1980 film by Akira Kurosawa. The title is a term used for an impersonator. It tells the story of a lower-class criminal who is taught to impersonate a dying warlord in order to dissuade opposing lords from attacking the newly vulnerable clan. The warlord whom the kagemusha impersonates is based on Shingen Takeda.

Plot[]

In 1572, there is a civil war in Japan, and three powerful clans, leaded by the lords Shingen Takeda, Nobunaga Oda and Ieyasu Tokugawa, dispute the conquest of Kyoto. When Shingen is mortally wounded, the Takeda clan hides the incident and uses a poor thief to be the double of the strategist Shingen and keep the respect of their enemies. Along the years, Kagemusha incorporates the spirit of the warrior of the dead warlord.
